Newcastle United have confirmed that Dennis Wise has left his position as executive director.
Wise was appointed to that role in January 2008 following the return of Kevin Keegan to the club as manager.
A statement from the Magpies said: "Newcastle United can today confirm that Dennis Wise has left his position as executive director (football).
"There are no plans to appoint a replacement in this role."
The move is likely to be part of a number of measures at the club which is expected to culminate in the official appointment of Alan Shearer as manager on Thursday.
Wise received a large amount of criticism from the Toon Army after his arrival at the club which only intensified when the fans also turned on owner Mike Ashley at the start of the season.
The involvement of the former MK Dons manager in transfer dealings at the end of the summer transfer window was reportedly partly responsible for Keegan's departure from the club in September.
Wise was believed to have a good relationship with Joe Kinnear while he was in charge at Newcastle but Kinnear's health problems mean he has been unable to return to the club following heart surgery.
With Shearer set to take over Wise's departure may have been part of the former striker's conditions to return to the club.
