The latest reports from Newcastle United suggest that former Queens Park Rangers manager Iain Dowie is to be named as Alan Shearer's assistant until the end of the season.
Following last night's sensational news that the Toon legend would be returning to the Magpies in a temporary role until the end of the season, Dowie - a team-mate of Shearer's at Southampton in the early 1990s - looks likely to be drafted in as his number two.
Dowie was sacked by QPR last October after just five months at the helm, despite a decent enough start to the season guiding the club to ninth in the Championship.
He also had short stints at Coventry City and Charlton Athletic between 2006 and 2008.
According to sources close to Dowie, he is not among Shearer's closest friends in football circles but he is instead being brought in as a more experienced sounding board for the Newcastle legend's ideas.
It remains unclear what current caretaker manager Chris Hughton's position will be in the new regime, as well as what the future holds for interim manager Joe Kinnear - who remains sidelined after heart bypass surgery in February.
