Steven Gerrard has revealed that Liverpool aimed to score three times tonight in order to prevent the threat of Lille putting them out of the Europa League on the away-goals rule.
Gerrard opened the scoring from the penalty spot as the Reds won 3-0 and 3-1 on aggregate and he said: "We thoroughly deserved to go through."
The England midfielder added: "The aim was to get three goals tonight as we knew Lille were very dangerous."
Referring to manager Rafael Benitez's recent criticism of the team, Gerrard said: "He's allowed to criticise the team, we didn't want to go to extra time as we know how difficult it will be on Sunday [when Liverpool face Manchester United]."
It is a fixture the Liverpool skipper is clearly optimistic about as he insisted: "If you're not looking forward to playing a good team like Man U there's something wrong."
