John Terry has confirmed credit for the winning goal against Manchester United may have to be given to Nicolas Anelka, who the Chelsea defender says got the final touch before it hit the back of the net.
The victorious captain appeared to head the Blues towards a win against their nearest rivals. But closer inspection showed that the ball glanced off the head of Terry before brushing Anelka's boot and beating Edwin van der Sar.
The goal was controversial in its own way, with the free kick awarded to Chelsea which lead to the goal seemingly harsh on United.
But Terry was just happy that his team managed to secure the win: "I've never managed to score against them home or away but Nico [Anelka] deserves credit."
On being asked about the five-point gap at the top of the Premier League, Terry stated: "That's exactly what we wanted coming into the game and we have been working towards it all week.
"It wasn't the best of games but I think overall we deserve it."
Terry also went on to reject claims that he may have got away with giving away a penalty during the first half after a tussle with Antonio Valencia.
"I don't think it was a penalty," he added.
"I managed to get my body in between the player and the ball and I'm glad the referee didn't give it."
