At Lord's in the World Twenty20, Pakistan took on the Netherlands in the final game of Group B with the Asian side needing a big win to go through. And inthenews.co.uk was on hand to bring you all the action, live, as it happened.

By Alistair Potter

16:26 - Today's second game is New Zealand v South Africa in what is essentially a dead rubber, with both sides already through after wins over Scotland. I'll leave you for now to think about what might have been for the Netherlands, but they were comprehensively outplayed by Pakistan.

16:22 - So, Pakistan join England in the second stage of the competition despite their underwhelming performance against Paul Collingwood's men on Sunday evening.

Younus Khan looked as if he had his team much more fired up today, and although their batting wasn't the best their bowling ranks did the job in knocking over a disappointing Dutch side for just 93 - well short of the 151 they needed.

PAKISTAN WIN THE MATCH BY 82 RUNS AND QUALIFY FOR SUPER EIGHTS

Over 18 (Gul) Netherlands 93 All Out, Smits 10*, Seelaar 0* . 1 W

Technically, the Dutch can still go through, though they can't win the game. It's not going to happen though - they've lost their heads with the bat really. Shame, they fielded well but couldn't back it up.

And that, as they say, is that. Seelaar is the last man to go, bowled by Gul. The Dutch made it to 17.3 overs when it looked like they might not even get that far but ultimately Pakistan's bowling was too good and the Netherlands' shot-making was far from the standards they set on Friday night against the hosts.

WICKET Seelaar, b Gul 1

Over 17 (Ajmal) Netherlands 92-9, Smits 10*, Seelaar 1* . 2 1 W 1 1

That's nearly that. Nannes becomes the fourth victim of a stumping in the innings as Akmal catches him out. Third wicket to Ajmal. One wicket needed for Pakistan to go through.

WICKET Nannes, st Akmal b Ajmal 6

Over 16 (Gul) Netherlands 87-8, Smits 6*, Nannes 6* 1 . 0wd . 2 . 1

Netherlands are trying to go out with a bang, but it's being stifled here and it's more of a whimper. Still, Gul doesn't cover himself in glory as a simple run-out chance goes begging. The Dutch are still alive here, but it's only a matter of time before their fate is sealed.

Over 15 (Ajmal) Netherlands 82-8, Smits 3*, Nannes 5* 1 2 1 1 1 .

Nannes survives a run out that looked like it was probably out but the third umpire's replay saw the crucial moment between frames and the Dutch bowler is given the benefit of the doubt. Not that it's going to matter too much.

Over 14 (Afridi) Netherlands 76-8, Smits 2*, Nannes 1* . 1 W . 1 1

Pakistan are in the driving seat as Afridi gets his third wicket in ten deliveries and he's doing all the damage here. Schiferli is the latest victim as he holes out at deep cover.

WICKET Schiferli, c Ajmal b Afridi 2

Afridi is done and his figures are amazing, 4-11. And two of those runs conceded were wides. Not bad.

Over 13 (Malik) Netherlands 73-7, Smits 0*, Schiferli 1* . 6 0wd 1 W . .

That's given the fans in orange something to cheer at least as Ten Doschate fires a big six - but it's the first boundary for six overs, which isn't good enough.

Ten Doschate tries to get things moving but is caught out as he misses Malik's shorter ball coming down the wicket and is stumped - Akmal's third of the match.

WICKET Ten Doschate, st Akmal b Malik 14

Over 12 (Afridi) Netherlands 62-6, Ten Doschate 7*, Schiferli 0* W . W 0wd . . .

De Grooth goes for an ambitious shot and misses the ball completely to give Afridi his second wicket.

WICKET De Grooth, b Afridi 4

Dan van Bunge is the next man to the crease and his first shot is a nervy inside edge that just misses the stumps. The Dutch are imploding.

WICKET Van Bunge st Akmal b Afridi 0

And as I write that, they've lost another wicket! Van Bunge leaves his crease to try to get off the mark from Afridi and is stumped by Akmal. This is pretty much all over, you'd think. A disastrous over for the Dutch and their fans are looking pretty forelorn now.

Over 11 (Malik) Netherlands 61-4, Ten Doschate 7*, De Grooth 4* 3 1 . 1 2 1

That's more like it, as Ten Doschate cuts one fine and runs three before another decent-looking shot square of the wicket gives them another single. Three more runs off the over.

Over 10 (Afridi) Netherlands 53-4, Ten Doschate 2*, De Grooth 1* 1 . 1 . . .

The Netherlands are falling behind the run-rate badly here and need some quick singles. They take two, and both could have been run-outs. Signs of nerves from the Dutch, who looked so composed chasing down England's total on Friday.

Over 9 (Ajmal) Netherlands 49-4, Ten Doschate 0*, Kervezee 21 1 1 1 W 2 W

Three singles don't tell the story as one skied opportunity falls safe and another upish shot sees the batsman survive. But oh dear, this isn't looking good for the Oranje. Borren skies an easy catch to Butt, who snaffles it easily this time.

WICKET Borren c Butt b Ajmal 2

Then two balls later Kervezee is stumped going for the big shot. This is quickly going south for the Dutch.

WICKET Kervezee st Akmal b Ajmal 21

Over 8 (Afridi) Netherlands 44-2, Borren 1*, Kervezee 17* W . 1 . 1 .

Not a good start to the eighth over as Zuiderent is out to Afridi's first delivery. Think he was deceived by the flight there and it's his off-stump that takes the punishment. Unlucky 13 again for the Netherlands - the second man out on that score.

WICKET Zuiderent, b Afridi 13

The new man is Borren and he's quickly off the mark with a single. But only two runs off that one means the Dutch run-rate is taking a nosedive here.

Over 7 (Ajmal) Netherlands 42-1, Zuiderent 13*, Kervezee 16* . . 4 . .

Another good boundary for four keeps the scoreboard ticking over, but there's little else to report other than a decision going upstairs for a possible stumping against Kervezee. He survives though.

Over 6 (Gul) Netherlands 37-1, Zuiderent 8*, Kervezee 16* . 2 1 4 . 1

Dangerman Umar Gul is into the attack for Pakistan and he'll look to do some damage. Nothing doing so far though, a dot ball and a slice to third man for two.

Over 5 (Tanveer) Netherlands 29-1, Zuiderent 3*, Kervezee 13* 1 1 1 . 1 .

A crowd catch in the covers off the final ball gets a big cheer, but otherwise a quiet over there. Netherlands won't be too bothered as long as they can keep wickets in hand and a half-decent run rate around seven an over. Currently it's just under six.

Over 4 (Amir) Netherlands 25-1, Zuiderent 1*, Kervezee 11* 2 . 4 . . 2

A good shot for two takes Kervezee to five before he top-edges one over the keeper that runs for four. An attempted hook then squirts out to the onside for no run before another Test-esque leave outside off-stump. His next ball is another attempted slog that goes straight up in the air but, running towards the boundary, Butt fails to take a catch that you could argue was a very good chance. You have to say poor fielding there.

Over 3 (Tanveer) Netherlands 17-1, Zuiderent 1*, Kervezee 3* . . 1 2 1 1

Chance of a run out there as the Dutch take a quick single but Akmal can't throw down the stumps from mid off. A direct hit and Zuiderent would've been walking. It's all happening now as Kervezee escapes a top edge that drops just beyond the clutching hands of the fielder. A single then moves the score onto 17 from the first three overs.

Over 2 (Amir) Netherlands 13-1, Zuiderent 0*, Kervezee 0* 4 4 W . . .

Straight down the ground for a four off the first ball and repeats the trick with the second. This is a promising start from the Dutch. Remember they're only chasing 151 in reality to qualify, even though they need 176 to win the match.

But that's not quite gone to plan! A hook goes down Tanveer's throat in the deep and Reekers is out after his three boundaries.

WICKET Reekers, c Tanveer b Amir 13

Three dot balls finish the over and it's a good one for Pakistan with the early breakthrough.

Over 1 (Tanveer) Netherlands 5-0, Reekers 5*, Kervezee 0* . 4 1 . . .

Quiet first over, other than a good boundary off the second ball from Reekers - flicking the ball over the circle and out to the covers.

14:55 - So, by my reckoning, the Netherlands need 151 to qualify for the Super Eights at Pakistan's expense. The Oranje got 163-6 as a winning score against England here four days ago, so this score is by no means out of reach.

Over 20 (Nannes) Pakistan 175-5, Fawad 3*, Misbah 31* 1 6 W 1 1 2

Oops - spoke too soon there. Afridi is on strike after a single from the first ball and he hammers one that clears the stand. But no! The big hitter is out next ball as Nannes scatters his stumps with a peach of a delivery. Not good news for Pakistan.

WICKET Afridi, b Nannes 13

Fawad Alam is the next man in and the left-hander can only squirt that one away for a single. Another single brings up the last ball which is misfielded - not indicative of an otherwise solid fielding performance from the Dutch - and yields two.

Over 19 (Schiferli) Pakistan 164-4, Afridi 7*, Misbah 29* 2 2 1 1 . 2

Decent over from Schiferli as he concedes eight, which isn't bad at this stage of a Twenty20 match with Afridi at the crease. A good final over to restrict Pakistan to under 175ish and the Netherlands have a real chance here...

Over 18 (Seelaar) Pakistan 156-4, Afridi 0*, Misbah 28* 1 6 6 . W 4

Uh oh - here we go! The skipper opens his shoulders and fires consecutive sixes, one to the onside boundary then another down the ground. But a dot ball holds him up before he holes out to De Grooth.

WICKET Younus, c De Grooth b Seelaar

That's good news for the Dutch - the bad news? Big-hitting Shahid Afridi comes to the crease for the final couple of overs. But it's Misbah that goes straight down the ground again, with another boundary to take the score to 17 runs off the over.

Over 17 (Borren) Pakistan 139-3, Younus 24*, Misbah 23* 2 1 2 1 1 2

Good running between the wickets from Younus and Misbah as they get a couple of decent twos in the first half of Borren's final over. Still, they are restricted to nine off that one and the Netherlands will probably take that.

Over 16 (Ten Doschate) Pakistan 130-3, Younus 19*, Misbah 19* 1 6 1 4 1 2

That's more like it - skipper Younus hammers one to cow corner for a big six and follows it up with a pushed single behind square. Misbah gets lucky with his next ball though as his thick inside edge evades the keeper and runs for four. This is the kind of over Pakistan badly needed and they are getting back into their stride now. 15 runs off the over.

Over 15 (Nannes) Pakistan 115-3, Younus 10*, Misbah 13* 1 1 1 1 . 1

It's getting to the stage now where Pakistan need someone to start clearing the rope. The run-rate is at just 7.7 an over and that simply won't do unless they can put in a heroic performance in the field. Another good over from Nannes though.

Over 14 (Seelaar) Pakistan 110-3, Younus 8*, Misbah 10* 1 1 2 4 2 1

Misbah is the new batsman and he's got Pakistan going again - first boundary for ages off his third ball faced and he races out to ten after four balls. That's more like it.

Over 13 (Borren) Pakistan 99-3, Younus 7*, Malik 30 1 1 1 . 2 W

After a shaky first over, Borren is looking far more settled - bowling his medium pacers on a good length. And now he's bagged himself a wicket. Loose shot from Malik, who goes looking for a six over the long boundary on the onside and finds only the hands of Seelaar in the deep. Well held too and the Dutch are showing their performance against England was no fluke. They're playing with great intensity here.

WICKET Malik, c Seelaar b Borren 30

Over 12 (Ten Doschate) Pakistan 94-2, Younus 5*, Malik 27* 1 1 1 1 1 1

Nothing doing for Pakistan there. A solid over from Ten Doschate with just six singles taken. That's 20 balls without a boundary now - worrying times for the men in green.

Over 11 (Borren) Pakistan 88-2, Younus 2*, Malik 24* . 2 1 1 1 1

A good over from Borren, who restricts the scoring further. Pakistan's run rate has slumped from almost ten a couple of overs ago to just eight now. Needing to win by 25 runs, they'll have to put the pedal to the metal soon...

Over 10 (Seelaar) Pakistan 81-2, Akmal 41, Malik 19* 1 1 1 1 . W

Another quiet over ends with a flourish as Akmal's attempted sweep flies through the air and it's a juggled catch from Schiferli. Big wicket that - Akmal looked set for a big score.

WICKET Akmal, c Schiferli b Seelaar 41

In comes the captain, and he needs to lead from the front here.

Over 9 (Ten Doschate) Pakistan 77-1, Akmal 39*, Malik 17* . 1 6 1 . 2

Wicket-taker extraordinaire Ten Doschate is back on and his first ball is another chance - put down by Zuiderent at backward point. It just about carried as well. Akmal then gets onto another wide one and slaps it over the ropes again. 39 off 25 balls is pretty good going from him. Good running gets Malik another two off the final ball.

Over 8 (Borren) Pakistan 67-1, Akmal 33*, Malik 14* 1 6 1 1 . 4

Second ball off the over is hammered for a six by Akmal - just clearing the man on the boundary at deep cover. Borren is lucky to escape with a couple of singles from his next two deliveries before Akmal puts him away for another boundary away on the onside. Most expensive over so far with 13 off it.

Over 7 (Seelaar) Pakistan 54-1, Akmal 21*, Malik 12* . 1 . 2 . 1

First sign of spin today as Pieter Seelaar is on at the Nursery End and he's tied down that end very well. Four runs off it and that's an excellent over.

Over 6 (Schiferli) Pakistan 50-1, Akmal 21*, Malik 9* 1 . 1 0wd . . .

A quiet over comes to life at the end with a big appeal for lbw against Akmal as he goes down to an attempted sweep, but it's turned down. A single then brings up Pakistan's 50.

Over 5 (Ten Doschate) Pakistan 46-1, Akmal 20*, Malik 8* 2 1 0wd W 4 . 4

Essex's Ryan ten Doschate is into the attack as Nannes comes off after a decent start. Will the Pakistani's look to target the new man?

Put simply - yes. The first shot is a high swipe that lands just away from the fielder's grasp. The second is a cut square of the wicket, but straight to the fielder for one. A wide lulls Butt into a false sense of security and a lookse drive is snaffled by Borrens at mid-off. Breakthrough for the men in orange!

WICKET Butt, c Borrens b Ten Doschate 18

Shoalib Malik is the new man and he's straight into the action with a four, from a decent flick off his pads. A dot ball is followed by another ball to make it 12 off the over from Ten Doschate.

Over 4 (Schiferli) Pakistan 34-0, Akmal 16*, Butt 18* 6 . 2 4 . .

Schiferli is back into the attack, and he's spanked for six on the offside. Pretty flat shot but it clears the boundary by about 10 metres. A couple of straight drives from Butt - one misfielded to hand him two runs before the second reaches the boundary. Good shot.

Over 3 (Nannes) Pakistan 22-0, Akmal 16*, Butt 6* 4 . . . 1 .

A boundary to start the over from Butt, but he doesn't exactly look the part after that with three consecutive air shots outside offstump. He gets off strike - probably the right thing to do given his previous three attempted shots - with a quick single. But Akmal doesn't do much better as he gets tied up in knots by a good final delivery from Nannes straight into his ribs. Another good over from Nannes.

Quick update on the scoring and tournament situation - Pakistan must win by 25 runs or more to go through. A 24-run victory and they'll still be out courtesy of a better run rate for the Dutch.

Over 2 (Schiferli) Pakistan 17-0, Akmal 16*, Butt 1* . 4 1 1 4 4

A one bounce four off Schiferli's second ball gives Pakistan their first boundary. Another swipe outside offstump brings up a second four for Akmal, who looks in good touch and focused here.

Over 1 (Nannes) Pakistan 5-0, Akmal 5*, Butt 0* . . . 2 2 1

Three dot balls to start. Not bad so far from one of the most experienced men in the Dutch team - paceman Dirk Nannes. Next two balls go for two each - Akmal almost piercing the circle but for a good stop from Dan van Bunge, then having another stopped short of the boundary. The final ball goes to deep square leg for a single.

13:29 - Having won the toss, Younus Khan opts for his side to bat first. Salman Butt and Kamran Akmal come out to open proceedings.

13:27 - Pakistan's anthem is second and has a more drum and cymbol sound to it. Big cheer for that too - lots of Pakistani fans inside Lord's today and it's another decent crowd, considering most people should be at work.

13:24 - It's anthems time as the teams emerge, Pakistan receive a bigger cheer out onto the field. I like the Dutch anthem though - sounds a bit like O Little Town of Bethlehem..

13:20 - Here are today's teams:

Pakistan:

Salman Butt

Kamran Akmal

Younus Kahn

Misbah-ul-Haq

Shahid Afridi

13:15 - Good afternoon and welcome to Lord's for the final match in Group B of the World Twenty20 between Pakistan and the Netherlands.

It's a surprisingly important game this after the events of the last few days.

The 2007 runners-up face a do-or-die task - needing to win by something like 30 runs to guarantee their place in the Super Eights stage.

Netherlands currently sit second in the group following their surprise win over hosts England in the opening game here last Friday. Even a narrow defeat today will see them through.

We'll be underway in less than 15 minutes now...
