England crashed out of the World Twenty20 at the Oval on Monday night, losing their must-win game against the West Indies by five wickets. Read all the dramatic action as it happened with inthenews.co.uk's live text commentary from the match.

By Richard James

22:04 - That's it then, England are out and will look back on the tournament with a series of mixed of feelings. West Indies on the other hand will be buzzing and looking forward to repeating their success in the semi-finals. Thanks for reading.

21:54 - Paul Collingwood: I'm proud of the guys, the way they fought all the way through the tournament, they showed fighting spirit all the way through. At one point I really thought we were going to win but its not easy defending a target like that off just nine overs. I think we're improving and the guys can be very proud of themselves.

Colly also tells me he's enjoyed being captain but was disappointed with some of his form through the competition including the lack of boundaries he scored with the bat.

21:28 - Chris Gayle is very happy with his team's victory, although he's so laid back it's hard to tell. Speaking in the press conference after the game Gayle says he's "very satisfied" with the result and happy to be in the semis. Man he's so cool. Sarwan sat next to him meanwhile has sweat pouring off him. Gayle tells inthenews.co.uk they will wait a few days to see how bad Fidel Edwards's back injury really is.

Match result: West Indies win by five wickets and progress to the semi-finals.

Over 9: So they need three from the last six balls. It was all looking so good for England about 20 minutes ago. These two have really steadied the ship after the dramatic fall of wickets earlier. 26 runs scored off those last two overs. Sidebottom will bowl the last over.

First ball: Chanderpaul goes for glory but they only get the one off a full toss.

Second ball: 4 runs. Sarwan smashes it to the boundary and West Indies win.

End of over 8 (Broad): West Indies 77-5, Sarwan 15, Chanderpaul 16

Over 8: Two overs to go, 16 needed. This is so close!!! Who's going to hold their nerve here and book their place in the semi-final. 13 runs came from that Anderson over. Stuart Broad now bowling. Sidebottom to bowl the last. A couple of great shots from Sarwan in that last over. First ball - and they get 3, Rashid slipped picking that up.

Second ball: Just one run down to third man, 12 needed

Third ball: Two runs by Chanderpaul, 10 needed

Fourth ball: Another two runs, short, pull to the leg side. 8 to win

Fifth ball: 4 RUNS. Chanderpaul flicks it off his pads to the ropes.

Sixth ball: 4 to win. One run.

End of over 7 (Anderson): West Indies 64-5, Sarwan 14, Chanderpaul 4

Over 7: 29 needed off 18 balls now and Anderson is back into the attack. Colly's had enough of Rashid for a second. Three overs to go, the three pace bowlers? Jimmy A, Sidebottom and Broad? I reckon that's what he'll go for. A single off the first ball. One-handed playing the yorker. Another single, followed by a wide. Just keep with the yorkers Jimmy! FOUR - over extra-cover by Sarwan and another!!!. Now West Indies need 18 off just 14 balls. The over startd so well, but those balls were very damaging.

End of over 6 (Swann): West Indies 51-5, Sarwan 4, Chanderpaul 2

Over 6: There were 11 runs off that last over. And we've got two spinners on the go as Swann continues. West Indies run two off the first ball. WICKET??? We're going to the third umpire, potential stumoing here: WICKET - Bravo, Bowled Swann, Stumped Foster, 18. Great work from Foster, so quick behind the stumps. Brilliant stumping. Sarwan in now. 34 to win off 22 balls. They run two there and then get a single. This game is going to go right down to the wire.

End of over 5 (Rashid): West Indies 43-4, Bravo 16, Chanderpaul 1

Over 5: Huge six over the long-off fielder's head off the last ball of Swann's over and this is getting real tight now. The W Indies need 48 off 30. Rashid's first ball goes for SIX. He smashed that over extra-cover. Why are they bowling Rashid now??? I would have preferred to see one of the pace boys now. That's why he's bowling! WICKET Pollard, Bowled Rashid 9. Shows what I know, Collingwood is probably feeling very happy with himself at making that bowling change. Shivnarine Chanderpaul now in.

End of over 4 (Swann): West Indies 32-3, Bravo 8, Pollard 7

Over 4: That's the end of the powerplay then and the dancing girls are up and enjoying themselves again. Swann to bowl this over. Dot ball up first and second. Tidy bowling from England's spinner. A couple of singles, and even those are getting cheers from the home supporters. SIX OFF THE LAST BALL!

End of over 3 (Broad): West Indies 23-3, Bravo 6, Pollard 1

Over 3: Siders gets massive cheer when he comes back to the boundary to field. He was man-of-the-match yesterday and that was a hell of a start. WICKET Simmons, Bowled Broad, Caught Sidebottom 0. GOLDEN DUCK!!! Broad's first ball and he edged that down to Sidebottom at third man. Pollard hits a four off his first ball. What a start by England. W Indies 20-3. Excellent start by the hosts.

End of over 2 (Sidebottom): West Indies 16-2, Simmons 0, Bravo 0

Over 2: The last ball of the first over and a wicket. That really climbed on Fletcher and he edged it high straight into Foster's gloves. Sidebottom's first ball - Fierce 4 smashed by Gayle. Followed up by a dot ball. Another four for Gayle - he cracked that through the covers for 4. He hits it so hard! They get another two runs and the West Indies captain is out!!! WICKET Gayle, Bowled Sidebottom, 15. Sidders clean bowled him there. Amazing scenes here. Sidebottom yorks Gayle and the danger man is gone.

End of over 1 (Anderson): West Indies 6-1, Gayle 5, Simmons 0

Over 1: West Indies need 80 off 54 balls as Gayle and Fletcher jog out into the middle. Athers reckons its a 'stiff target'. We'll see. James Anderson to bowl the first six balls. Seven balls now - First ball is a wide. Gayle slashes the third ball of the over for four, he cut that real hard. Ryan Sidebottom is fielding right below me, he gets a great reception from the England fans. He could be crucial tonight. A dot ball gets a massive cheer, those bad boys are vital. And another one - brilliant one-handed stop by Anderson off his own bowling. WICKET, Fletcher out, Bowled Anderson, Caught Foster, 0.

WEST INDIES NEED 80 TO WIN OFF NINE OVERS..

20:14: Three over powerplay. If the scores end on 79 - it's a tie and we get a 'super-over'. A super-over, now I like the sound of that. England are going to have to bowl with real discipline here and keep it tight. The players are back on the picth warming up, ten minutes till we start again.

20:07: It's going to be a nine over game we hear and it starts at 20:25 BST. Rumour has it the W Indies will be set 80 to win off nine overs. I'll keep you updated. 8.89 runs an over needed by Chris Gayle's team.

20:02: Umpires back out in the middle. I think it's stopped raining now so fingers crossed we could get some play here. To my left I can see some blue sky peeking through the clouds. To my left it looks like Armageddon - dark dark dark. A cheer goes up! Covers coming off...

19:47: Does this make any sense? England need to bowl five overs at the West Indies to make it a game. If there isn't enough time due to the weather then the match will be abandoned and both sides will be awarded a point - not good news for England because Chris Gayle's men have a superior run rate and would therefore progress to the semi-finals. The umpires come on but head off again when the rain comes down harder. We can keep playing up till 20:40 BST but for every four minutes from now we lose an over.

19:37: If the game goes to five overs due to the rain, West Indies will be chasing 47 for the win, and they'll fancy getting that I reckon. England will hope the covers come off pretty quick... On the other hand, John Dyson probably doesn't fancy having to work out required runs on the old D/L after his balls up over back in the West Indies previously against England.

19:24: England will feel much happier after those last two balls. They've got a defendable total now, but it may all depend on what kind of mood Gayle's in. He could make it look pretty ordinary if he goes for it. The covers are now back on, I think we might start losing some overs soon.

END OF ENGLAND INNINGS: 161-6: Fourteen from the last over. A great cameo from Broad there, a nice four followed by a huge six straight over Benn's head. The crowd loved that. Ten minute break until the West Indies innings.

End of over 20 (Benn): England 161-6, Swann 10, Broad 10

Over 20: As they did yesterday, England have failed to really push on in the second-half of their innings. Benn to bowl the last. Two runs off the first ball, only a single off the second. Foster now on strike as England reach 150. WICKET Foster out, Bowled Benn, Caught Pollard 13. Foster caught at long-on going for the boundary after Benn tossed it up. Stuard Broad now in - Four runs on the leg-side. First boundary since the 11th over. SIX!!!

End of over 19 (Bravo): England 147-5, Foster 13 Swann 6

Over 19: Bravo from the Vauxhall End. Only 35 runs scored from the last five overs. A mis-field hands England three runs. That was Fletcher, a great catch earlier in the day but that was poor, very poor. England's supporters finally find their voices. Swann smacks two more, a low full-toss dispatched.

End of over 18 (Benn): England 138-5, Foster 9 Swann 2

Over 18: Really impressive lightening and some seriously dark clouds over the Oval. Big Benn to bowl next and it is dark here, really really dark - the floodlights doing the job big time. England need some boundaries big time, desperate need of some big scoring. The fears at the beginning of the game seem to becoming a reality here, Collingwood said there was a lot of pressure on the top 5, but these two need to starts swinging for the windows. Poor over for England, only 6 scored.

End of over 17 (Bravo): England 132-5, Foster 6 Swann 0

Over 17: A wide first ball back after the rain break, two runs for Colly. WICKET Collingwood LBW Bravo 11. He was hit straight on the boot trying to swipe it through the covers.

19:04 - Who'd be a dancing girl in this weather, they look as miserable as KP on the England dressing room balcony. Anyway, the covers are off and the umpires are walking out to the middle throwing a ball in the air.

Over 17: Right. Play to resume at 19:08 BST and no overs have been lost. That's what we're being told. 129-4.

Over 17: The umpires are out on the pitch chatting with ground staff, hopefully we'll get some play again shortly. And the covers are coming off.

Over 17: So we've got two balls left in the 17th over and England have come off for rain. They can add an extra half an hour before they start cutting overs. Don't worry about us in the media suite though - strawberries and cream come out. Good cheese board too.

Over 17: Bopara's 55 came off 47 balls and its Bravo to bowl. The two batsmen in the middle are relatively fresh but there's no time for settling in, England will want to get past 150 and set an imposing target. But there're having real trouble finding the ropes, they've got no big hitters left. RAIN STOPS PLAY. Absolutely hammering it down.

End of over 16 (Gayle): England 122-4, Collingwood 7, Foster 1

Over 16: England need a big last five overs, they've built a good platform it's time to push on. Bopara looks pretty damn tired, but reverse-sweeps Gayle for four. Great shot. Rain not so bad but the coats and brollies are out. WICKET Bopara out, LBW Gayle, 55.. Bopara's impressive innings comes to an end and James Foster marches out to the middle.

End of over 15 (Sammy): England 116-3, Bopara 52, Collingwood 5

Over 15: Is it raining? It might be you know, it might be. 50 for Bopara Tasty knock that, off 43 balls, five 4s. Raining now. The crowd are covering up.

End of over 14 (Gayle): England 112-3, Bopara 49, Collingwood 4

Over 14: A sign of the weather here at the Oval, the dancing girls have had enough and are now wearing hooded tops to keep warm, not enough boundaries to keep them warm that's the problem. Gayle brings himself back on to bowl. England need to pick it up a bit, too many singles and not enough quick scoring.

End of over 13 (Sammy): England 105-3, Bopara 44, Collingwood 2

Over 13: Diving backwards on the deep square-leg boundary Andre Fletcher just took a blinding catch. Captain Collingwood in now. 100 up for England off 76 balls. Shah had looked like he was shaping up for some big hitting, bet he wasn't expecting a catch like that though. Brilliant, especially in the fading light. Sammy bowling now, West Indies keeping it pretty tight since KP's departure.

End of over 12 (Bravo): England 98-3, Bopara 39, Collingwood 0

Over 12: So the scoreboard is still ticking over pretty quickly for the hosts here, a few more overs of this and then they can start swinging for the trees. Bravo still bowling from the pavilion end. Shah starts to loosen his arms for the first few balls. Another fumble from the captain Gayle and England steal a single. AMAZING CATCH Shah out, bowled Bravo, caught Fletcher 18

End of over 11 (Taylor): England 94-2, Bopara 37, Shah 16

Over 11: England have scored 12 fours so far at the half-way stage. Jerome Taylor back to bowl. Massive six by Shah, he launched that high high into the crowd. Gayle already looking at his feet and playing with his hair. That six was a lovely shot, it really was. Flicked over mid-wicket for a maximum score.

End of over 10 (Bravo): England 83-2, Bopara 36, Shah 8

Over 10: The sun is shining! Lovely sunshine breaks out across the Oval. Dwayne Bravo is bowling by the way and bowling very nicely. Bopara edges one down to third man for a four to bring his score to 35.

End of over 9 (Gayle): England 75-2, Bopara 30, Shah 6

Over 9: Shah in now and England will try and keep the momentum going despite the loss of their best batsman. He times a lovely cut to perfection and guides the ball to the boundary. You can't really complain too much about KP's wicket, he scored at a pretty quick rate and steadied the ship after the loss of Wright.

End of over 8 (Simmons): England 68-2, Bopara 29, Shah 0

Over 8: Big Benn off and Lendl Simmons on. The size difference between the England batsmen is pretty comical, Little and Large I'm going to call them. First ball - Little (Bopara) square-cuts it for 4. Large likes the look of that and paddles one round the corner for a boundary of his own. "OFF OFF OFF" the crowd call at the dancing girls, I think have been on the beer for a few hours now. WICKET Pietersen, Bowled Simmons, Caught Fletcher, 31. Massive blow for the hosts - KP tries to go for a maximum but its doesn't have enough power and is caught in the deep. Comedy fielding by the W Indies the next ball gifts England a 4.

End of over 7 (Gayle): England 54-1, Bopara 20, Pietersen 27

Over 7: Powerplay now over and Gayle's going to have a bowl. Two spinners = furious typing! The crowd are trying to start a Mexican Wave going, not happening, it appears too many people fancy sitting down for now.

End of over 6 (Benn): England 49-1, Bopara 16, Pietersen 26

Over 6: Projected score at this point - 172. KP is playing Benn with some serious caution, I was expecting him to really go after the big spinner. Already there have been a few mis-fields by the W Indies, maybe it's the weather - we know they don't like it when its cold...

End of over 5 (Taylor): England 43-1, Bopara 14, Pietersen 22

Over 5: Jerome Taylor next to bowl. Great shot that. Pure timing as KP guides a drive to the ropes for 4. He does it again two balls later. Pietersen's pretty up for this one, if he can keep on scoring at this rate England could set a tasty total here. Bopara fancies some of the action too and copies KP last shot with a drive to the ropes of his own.

End of over 4 (Benn): England 28-1, Bopara 9, Pietersen 13

Over 4: Time for some spin - Sulieman Benn on to bowl. KP plays the first one very calmly, how long can he do that for? Well the first two ball he defends and the third they take a single and again on the fourth. Mis-field from G Gayle gifts England 2 runs.

End of over 3 (Sammy): England 23-1, Bopara 8, Pietersen 9

Over 3: Wright didn't last long and if England get through here I'd suprised to see him in the team for the semis. Bopara hits a lovely straight drive for 4. Dancing girls? Oh we've got them - I think they're a tad cold though. If England keep smacking boundaries they'll have plenty to dance about to keep them warm. Go on KP, do it for the dancers.

End of over 2 (Pollard): England 17-1, Bopara 3, Pietersen 8

Over 2: Kieron Pollard bowling next and England sprint through for a quick single. If you can't hit boundaries in this game you've got to run the ones and twos, dot balls are no good. WICKT Wright Bowled Pollard, Caught Ramdin 6. He tried to smack that one, but only managed to sky it miles in the air and the wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin took a pretty easy catch. KP time. First ball - 4. He just swiped that to the boundary, no fuss. Second ball - Four. KP charges down the wicket and pulls Pollard to the ropes.

End of over 1 (Sammy): England 7-0, Wright 6, Bopara 1

Over 1: Here we go then. It's pretty dark overhead, let's hope the weather stays OK for the next few hours. Big huddle from the W Indies followed by a huge cheers for England's opening batsmen.

Sammy to open the bowling. And it's almost a run-out second ball! Bopara just managed to get his bat down at the non-strikers end there. First boundary of the day as Wright cuts Sammy for four. They get two more the next ball.

17:25 - Some mutterings that the Oval suits the spinners so it's no real surprise Rashid comes in. Phil Tufnell reckons Wright was pretty likely to hold onto the opening batting slot. Collingwood just admitted there will be serious pressure on England's top 5 batsmen to get deliver here. Some big individual scores needed.

The players are out and it's time for the national anthems.

17:18 - So Mascarenhas misses out despite a pretty good knock against India yesterday. England going with two spinners again for this winner-takes-all game. The hosts will be very happy with news Edwards hasn't made it - he can be seriously dangerous when he gets going. So it'll be Ravi Bopara and Luke Wright to open the batting.

17:11 - Here comes to the toss then.Collingwood wins it and announces England are going to have a bat. Big team news: Adil Rashid replaces Dimitri Mascarenhas. The Windies lose Fidel Edwards who's pulled out with a back injury apparently. In comes Darren Sammy.

17:07 - Under half an hour to go and both teams are out on the pitch warming up. Luke Wright is marching round the boundary with a bat in his hands looking pretty fired up. Sidebottom is sending down some pretty rapid practice balls too. I reckon he'll be starting today for sure, he was brilliant yesterday.

17:00 - On paper West Indies should have the upper hand going into this game. They destroyed both Australia and India by seven wickets and lost to South Africa by only 20 runs. England on the other hand have lost to The Netherlands and were humiliated by South Africa. But they're so temperamental the W Indies. It'll be very interesting to see what kind of mood Gayle, in particular, is in today.

16:57 - Colly was in a pretty buoyant mood following the India victory. He wasn't happy about being booed by the Indian supporters when England walked off the practice area though. Something about it not being nice having to hear boos at your home ground. I was at the game yesterday and I reckon about 65 per cent of the crowd were supporting India and they were making about 98 per cent of the noise. That is, until England started bowling the short stuff.

16:50 - There's a capacity crowd here today for what should be a belter of a game. Last night saw a greatly improved England team defeat the current holders India at Lord's. Fierce pace bowling won the hosts that game and it'll be interesting to see what team they select today.

Paul Collingwood's men haven't had much of a rest though. The England captain and man-of -the-match Ryan Sidebottom were still chatting with the press at gone 22:00 GMT on Monday night.

16:30- Hello and welcome to inthenews.co.uk's text commentary LIVE from the Oval.

Today, England take on the West Indies in a one-off knockout game, which will see one of the two teams take their place in the semi-finals of the World Twenty20 alongside group winners South Africa.

England beat West Indies 2-0 in both the Test and one-day series' on home soil earlier this year. But - as we all know - Twenty20 cricket is an entirely different animal and a certain Chris Gayle may have a point to prove against his English detractors following his comments about the different forms of the game.

Can the hosts repeat the trick of humbling the Caribbean side? Or will we witness a backlash? We'll find out soon enough.
