The mining and banking sectors helped the FTSE 100 recover from a disappointing morning to end Tuesday up over half a per cent.
At the close of play the London index stood at 5,283.31, a rise of 35.90, 0.68 per cent.
The biggest winner on the day was Eurasian Natural Resources Corp which gained 4.6 per cent to 977p.
Amec and Cairn Energy also posted impressive gains, up 4.52 per cent and 4.14 per cent respectively.
After announcing annual profits had fallen by 45 per cent, BP witnessed the most significant drops on Tuesday, falling 3.8 per cent.
Severn Trent also fell 1.88 per cent, with Legal and General Group slipping 1.71 per cent.
