By Richard James.

There has been a slight fall in the number of new cases of swine flu in England during the last week, health officials have revealed.

Over the last seven days there were 46,000 cases of the H1N1 virus diagnosed, down from 53,000 the week before.

The number of people in hospital from the virus was also down from 783 to 783, with 154 in intensive care.

However the number of deaths linked to swine flu rose last week, with 28 in the UK as a whole, of which 21 were in England.

Commenting on the rise in deaths, the chief medical officer Sir Liam Donaldson admitted the number of cases "at the severe end of the spectrum" was continuing to worry health officials.

He added though that the recently launched immunisation campaign had seen an estimated one million people in the "high risk" groups receive the vaccine.
