At least six people died in Karachi, southern Pakistan, when stockpiled explosives apparently went off accidentally.

Television footage shows police removing guns, grenades and what appeared to be an explosive suicide vest from the house.

Police chief Waseem Ahmed said the occupants may have been planning a terrorist attack.

"Police have recovered one Kalashnikov rifle and two hand grenades," he told the Reuters news agency.

"We have also taken into custody two suspects who were injured in the blast."

According to the Associated Press news agency, blood was splattered on the walls and body parts were visible in the rubble.

Crews are handling the clean-up delicately, in case more explosives are hidden in the rubble.

The explosion destroyed a house in Baldia, a mostly ethnic Pashtun neighbourhood and suspected Taliban hideout.

Some of the people staying in the house were apparently from the Swat valley.

Prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said he was concerned that the weapons store had "remained unnoticed by the law enforcement agencies".

Karachi has long avoided the levels of violence seen elsewhere in Pakistan, but the discovery of the suspected terrorist arms cache raises fears.

The blast comes only days after a suicide bomber killed dozens in an attack on a Shia Muslim religious procession, provoking fury and violence.
