American singer/song writer John Mayer has apologised for using an offensive racial term in a recent interview.
The guitarist, famed for dating a string of celebrities including Jennifer Aniston, used the racial epithet during an interview with Playboy magazine.
The comment, the exact context of which is unclear, came during a wide ranging interview which covered his music, love life, appreciation of pornography, and use of the micro-blogging site Twitter.
Mayer has since apologised and tried to explain his use of the word. He wrote on Twitter: "Re: using the 'N word' in an interview: I am sorry that I used the word. And it's such a shame that I did because the point I was trying to make was in the exact opposite spirit of the word itself. "
He added: "It was arrogant of me to think I could intellectualize using it, because I realize that there's no intellectualizing a word that is so emotionally charged."
Mayer's racial comment has been met with confusion and anger by the US media and fellow musicians. Rapper Ice T tweeted: "Wow! That's sad because I liked that dude. Well there go all his black fans and his hood pass. Damn John!!"
Mayer's latest album Battle Studies went to number one in the US upon release.
