England have received a major boost one week before they begin their competitive fixtures in the Caribbean with the news that all-rounder Andrew Flintoff should be fit for the first Test.
The 31-year-old complained of a pain in his side on the second day of the opening warm-up match against a St Kitts and Nevis XI yesterday.
But after Flintoff underwent a medical check up, with the results being sent to the England and Wales Cricket Board's chief medical officer Nick Peirce back in the UK, the Lancastrian was shown to have avoided a significant injury.
A spokesman for the England team told the ECB's official website: "The scan showed no major damage and we will continue to assess Andrew on a daily basis.
"We haven't made a decision yet as to whether he is available for the next three-day game [against West Indies A at Warner Park]."
The first match of the four-Test series between England and West Indies begins at Jamaica's Sabina Park next Wednesday.
Flintoff was one of two injury scares for the tourists yesterday, with fellow middle-order man Owais Shah suffering a scratched cornea that has forced him to wear a protective eye patch.
Shah is sweating over a place in the squad for the first match next week, despite scoring an unbeaten 125 in the first innings of this week's warm-up game.
