Martin Scorsese's new thriller Shutter Island, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, has topped the US box office charts after its first weekend on release, it has been confirmed.
The Paramount Pictures release took an estimated $40.2 million (£25.9 million) to comfortably knock last week's number one, Valentine's Day, off the number one slot while also claiming the highest opening haul of Scorsese and DiCaprio's four onscreen collaborations.
"It feels like a movie that garners a lot of attention in conversation," Paramount vice chairman Rob Moore was quoted by Variety as saying.
"I think the good thing about the way the film is positioned, for older audiences looking for movies in this genre, this movie now has a pretty clear playing field to run."
Shutter Island was the only new release in the US top ten with Valentine's Day falling to second and Avatar climbing one place to fourth.
Horror remake The Wolfman saw an estimated 69 per cent drop in takings in its second weekend on release as it fell two places to fifth while Oscar-nominated drama Crazy Heart climbed one place to eighth as awards season helps the Jeff Bridges film gain momentum.
The Ghost Writer, Roman Polanski's adaptation of the Robert Harris novel, made an impressive $179,000 (£115,705) despite opening on only four screens, with a wider release scheduled for next weekend.
The top ten films in the US are: (last week's position)
