Martin Scorsese thriller Shutter Island has retained the number one spot in the US as Kevin Smith gained the highest debut of his career with Cop Out.
Don Harris, executive vice president of distribution for Shutter Island's distributor Paramount, described Scorsese as one of the "greatest living directors of our time".
"Clearly, audiences like the movie, and they're talking about it," Harris told Variety. "When [Scorsese] makes a movie, I think people are interested to see what he's made."
Paramount's Shutter Island took $22.2 million to remain at the summit as police comedy Cop Out, starring Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan, entered at number two with a creditable $18.6 million.
The Crazies, a remake of the 1973 George Romero horror about a town driven made by a poisoned water supply, was the other new entry in the US top ten, debuting in third.
Former chart-topper Valentine's Day and horror update The Wolfman both slipped out of the top ten.
