Sale Sharks and England prop Andrew Sheridan could be out until midway through the 2010 Six Nations after it was revealed he needs full reconstructive surgery on his left shoulder.
Sheridan was injured when a scrum collapsed in the Friday night match between Sale and Cardiff Blues in the Heineken Cup and required lengthy treatment on the field, including oxygen.
After being taken to hospital for scans on the joint over the weekend, the full extent of the injury was revealed - meaning he will miss the next four months, including the entire European pool stages, England's autumn internationals and the start of the Six Nations next year.
"He's a great presence around our team and he will be missed," said Sale Sharks director of rugby Kingsley Jones.
"It's bad news for Andrew, England and Sale Sharks and we just have to come to terms with it."
Sheridan will go under the knife on Wednesday at the BMI Alexandra hospital in Cheadle, just outside Manchester.
He will start his rehabilitation period after the operation and is expected to be able to play again by late February 2010.
