History
Formed in 1889 in conjunction with Sheffield Cricket Club, United have long flirted with being one of football's bigger names. An early league championship and four FA Cup wins marked Sheffield out as the home of league football in its early incarnation - but fallower times followed as the club yo-yoed its way between the top two tiers seven times between 1949 and 1976. A nadir was reached in 1981 when the Blades fell to the fourth division - but happier times were to follow under the auspices of Dave "Harry" Bassett, who took the club from the third division to the first division (today's Premiership) in quicksilver time between 1988 and 1990. There they stayed, buoyed by the goalscoring exploits of such figures as Brian Deane, until a dramatic last-minute winner by Chelsea's Mark Stein saw them relegated on the final day of the 1993/94 season. Two losing play-off final appearances and generous doses of mediocrity later, a side superbly drilled by lifelong fan Neil Warnock won today's Championship in 2006, having set a blistering pace at the start of the season.
