Serena Williams won a grudge match against Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez to advance to the last 16 of the US Open, a tournament she first won ten years ago.
The defending champion accused the Spaniard of cheating when they met at this year's US Open but tonight's match, which Williams won 6-3, 7-5, was played in a better spirit.
She will now face Daniela Hantuchova for a place in the last eight. Hantuchova seemed to be on course to beat Williams at Wimbledon a few years ago until her opponent made use of a medical time-out to regroup and avoid defeat.
Eighth seed Victoria Azarenka of Belarus surprisingly lost to Francesca Schiavone of Italy, 4-6 6-2 6-2.
Another Italian, Flavia Pennetta, was also in impressive form, crushing Canada's Aleksandra Wozniak 6-1 6-1.
