Serena Williams will miss this year's Wimbledon and French Open but she has denied that she will retire from the game permanently.
Speculation has suggested that the American tennis star would decide to give up on her comeback from a knee injury.
The former world number one suffered the injury at the Australian Open earlier in the year but she has not been fully fit for a couple of years.
Williams has described her knee problems as still "chronic" despite having undergone a number of operations since 2003.
During her time on the sidelines, she has dropped out of the world top 100 because she has played just four times since the US Open.
But she has vowed: "I fully intend to be competing in the coming months. My doctors say I should be in a position to be playing again by the end of the summer.
"Sometimes life throws you punches and you have to get up. Because if you don't get up, people will walk all over you."
Venus Williams' younger sister added: "I want everyone to know that I will be back on the tennis court. I'm more excited than ever to resume my playing career as soon as my body is ready."
Since their sister Yetunde was shot in 2003 both of the sporting sisters have admitted to having lost some of their focus on the game and Serena has even launched her own brand of fashion and cosmetics.
