Great Britain skipper Paul Sculthorpe has been forced into another bout of knee surgery as he struggles for fitness.

The St Helens loose forward played a key role in the Saints' World Club Challenge victory over the Brisbane Broncos last Friday, but his return after a six-month absence has proved short-lived with further work needed on the joint.

The defending Super League champions are expected to have to do without the 29-year-old former Man of Steel until their March 23rd Knowsley Road clash with Hull KR as he undergoes an arthroscopy to remove floating debris.

"This is a result of general wear and tear over 300-plus matches. It is not an uncommon procedure for players who have played so many games," read a club statement.

Coach Daniel Anderson was attempting to remain philosophical in the face of a disappointing start to his side's title defence with only one win in their opening three games.

"It is obviously frustrating for both Scully and the club," Anderson said.

"We want him to play and he wants to play but the fact is that injuries are part and parcel of the game.

"It is important to keep this in perspective, however, and remember that this is a routine operation."
