Professor Stephen Hawking has been taken to hospital amid warnings the world famous scientist is "very ill".
A spokesperson for Cambridge University said the 67-year-old had been battling a chest infection for several weeks.
"Professor Hawking is very ill," the spokesman said. "He is undergoing tests. He has been unwell for a couple of weeks."
Wheelchair-bound Professor Hawking, whose only method of communicating is through a finger-activated voice synthesiser, is almost completely paralysed from motor neurone disease.
The professor, who wrote A Brief History of Time, is currently being treated at Addenbrookes hospital in Cambridge.
