Professor Stephen Hawking is expected to make a full recovery after been admitted to hospital with chest problems.
The 67-year-old was described as being "very ill" on Monday when reports emerged he was suffering with a suspected respiratory infection.
A spokesperson for Cambridge University said Professor Hawking was being kept in for observation but he was in a "comfortable" condition with his family at his side.
The author of A Brief History of Time is reported to have been ill for a number of weeks prior to his hospitalisation.
The famous scientist can only communicate through a finger-activated voice synthesiser connected to his wheelchair and is almost completely paralysed from motor neurone disease.
