Al Gore's latest campaign seeks to engage Americans to support environmentally-friendly policies

Science In Focus

A new campaign launched by environmental campaigner Al Gore seeks to engage ten million Americans to support green policies.

The Alliance for Climate Protection, chaired by the former US vice-president, said the We campaign will help to "embolden leaders in both major political parties and all sectors of civil society" to offer policies that will effectively reduce carbon emissions as well as other greenhouse gas pollutants.

The campaign will last for three years and is to target people through online, television, print and mobile campaigning.

More than one million people have already signed up to support the Alliance's goals.

"We can solve the climate crisis, but it will require a major shift in public opinion and engagement," said Mr Gore.

"The technologies exist, but our elected leaders don't yet have the political will to take the bold actions required. When politicians hear the American people calling loud and clear for change, they'll listen."

The We campaign's first television advert draws a parallel between the spirit that America used to help win the second world war and the spirit needed to find solutions to help reduce climate change.

Alliance chief executive Cathy Zoi commented: "There is no problem that can't be solved when Americans unite behind a shared commitment.

"Solving the climate crisis is a moral question that transcends who we vote for, which house we worship in or who signs our paychecks. It is past time for us to come together on this issue."
