Organic food has significant health benefits over non-organic products, research has suggested.
Initial findings from Newcastle University's Organic Food Project reveal considerable variations in the amount of antioxidants in organic fruit and vegetables compared to non-organic varieties.
Antioxidants benefit the body by protecting cells from the harmful effects of free radicals.
The findings come three years into the five-year project, led by Professor Carlo Leifert and based at Nafferton Farm attached to Newcastle University.
"The project is still ongoing and although we have some encouraging results already, there is a lot of work still to do, including going through the peer review process," commented Professor Carlo Leifert.
"The EU also needs to check and sign off any new results before we publish them."
The 18 million (£12.5 million) European Union-funded study is focussing on the value of organic products to both consumers and producers.
Final results from the study, which involves more than 30 research institutions, are expected to be published during the next 12 months.
