The social-networking website Facebook has announced it will "memorialise" profiles of the members who have died, if requested by their friends and family.
The accounts will be different from normal Facebook profiles with the majority of the information removed.
If a user is reported as deceased all the contact information and status updates will be taken off and other people will be prevented from logging on to the account.
The profile will also only be viewable by the deceased person's confirmed friends.
A blog entry on the site written by Max Kelly said: "We understand how difficult it can be for people to be reminded of those who are no longer with them, which is why it's important when someone passes away that their friends or family contact Facebook to request that a profile be memorialised.
"As time passes, the sting of losing someone you care about also fades but it never goes away."
Facebook has developed into the most popular social-networking site on the internet since its foundation in 2004, with over 300 million active users worldwide.
