Sex on a daily basis could help to improve some men's fertility, researchers have found.
The Australian study suggests that regular ejaculation could help to improve some parts of sperm quality.
Some fertility patients are often told to abstain from sex for a period of time to obtain optimal sperm count.
But the latest study suggests that in some men increased abstinence can harm sperm DNA.
David Greening and colleagues from Sydney IVF studied 42 patients with abnormal sperm structure from a group of couples being investigated for recurrent miscarriage or repeated IVF failure.
After seven days of daily ejaculation 37 of the patients showed decreased sperm DNA fragmentation while five showed increased fragmentation.
The researchers propose that on average daily ejaculation over seven days can result in a 12 per cent reduction in DNA fragmentation.
Sperm shape and ability to move quickly were not significantly affected but average total sperm count dropped from 201.76 million per millilitre to 67.6 million per millilitre.
Presenting the findings at the Annual Meeting of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, the researchers suggest that DNA fragmentation could result from increased of the sperm to reactive oxygen species in the epididymus.
