The three new wind farms will produce 215 megawatts of green energy

Three new wind farms that will provide 215 megawatts of green energy have been given the go-ahead by the government.

Renewable Energy Systems will develop a wind farm at Keadby, north Lincolnshire, which will have 39 turbines creating enough energy to power up to 38,000 homes.

Twenty-two turbines will be installed at a wind farm at Thorne, south Yorkshire, and an offshore wind farm is planned for the Thames estuary.

The latter development, by Dong Energy, will be established at least five miles from Frinton-on-Sea on the Essex coast and will add 22 turbines to the Gunfleet Sands wind farm that is yet to be built.

"These three new wind farms will add a further 215 megawatts of green energy to the renewables revolution that is sweeping through the UK," said energy minister Malcolm Wicks.

"Real momentum for renewables in the UK is building. Through our renewables obligation we have more than doubled the amount of renewable electricity, and this will triple again to 15 per cent by 2015 through changes in the energy bill.

"We are on course to overtake Denmark next year as the world leader in offshore wind and we are reviewing our strategy to take us even further."
