Ferrari have confirmed that seven-time formula one world champion Michael Schumacher will step in as Felipe Massa's replacement for the remainder of the season.
The team's communications manager told inthenews.co.uk that the German will return to the sport at the next event in Valencia and will remain with the team until the season finale in Abu Dhabi.
"Michael Schumacher will take Felipe's seat at Ferrari until we feel Felipe is well enough to return," he said.
"But we are not going to put him under any pressure, so Michael will probably see out the season with us."
On his website, the German said: "The most important thing first: thank God, all news concerning Felipe is positive. I wish him all the best again.
"I was meeting this afternoon with Stefano Domenicali and Luca di Montezemolo and together we decided that I will prepare myself to take the place of Felipe.
"Though it is true that the formula one chapter has been closed for me for a long time, it is also true that for loyalty reasons to the team I cannot ignore this unfortunate situation.
"But as the competitor I am I am also very much looking forward to facing this challenge."
When Schumacher makes his first appearance at the end of August, it will be the first time he has driven an F1 car competitively for almost three years.
He steps in for Felipe Massa, who suffered a fractured skull and concussion during qualifying for the Hungarian grand prix on Saturday.
Massa is said to be making a swift recovery in hospital and it has been confirmed that he is speaking and walking.
The Brazilian has been moved from intensive care today.
