Paul Scholes has revealed he considered making a dramatic return to international football after being asked by Steve McClaren.
The Manchester United midfielder retired from the international scene after Euro 2004 to prolong his club career.
Reports suggested he was unhappy at being played on the wing by former coach Sven Goran Eriksson.
Scholes, who scored 14 goals in 65 caps for England, has been contacted twice by McClaren to reverse his decision, but the 31-year-old said it was not a straightforward decision to snub the England coach.
"I thought about it, but decided against it," he said.
"It's flattering when the England boss asks you to go back, but basically I decided I didn't need to go back."
Scholes also admitted he was frustrated with his lack of goals having missing most of last year's campaign with an eye problem.
"I have played a lot better than I am at the moment," he said.
"I am frustrated at not scoring many goals for a start. I like scoring but I only have two so far. I would like it to be more."
Scholes netted twice in October in United's wins over Liverpool at Old Trafford and Copenhagen in the Champions League.
He is expected to play in Tuesday's clash with Celtic at Parkhead with Sir Alex Ferguson's side needing a win to clinch qualification.
