A schizophrenic man who avoided jail following an earlier attack has been jailed for life for murder over another attack he pleaded guilty to.
Colin Welsh, 42, of Tottenham, north London, stabbed Elliot Guy, 27, in the neck in Tufnell Park in July 2008.
Four months after he walked free from court for a brutal attack on a fellow St Andrews university student in Scotland, Welsh committed the second attack on Mr Guy. Sentencing, the judge at the Old Bailey said he was "clearly dangerous".
Judge Brian Barker, the Common Serjeant of London, told Welsh: "The fact that you escaped custody and were sent down from St Andrews should have been a significant turning point. Nothing I have been told indicates that you sought any help for your illness and it is the greatest pity that you did not."
Welsh admitted manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility and will serve a minimum of 12 years in prison. The court heard how he had dozens of convictions, including possession of knives. But he was also suffering from mental illness and heard voices he believed were coming from a transmitting device placed in his ear, the court was told.
Mr Guy, a cabinet market from Hanwell, had become a father 12 weeks before he was killed at a party by Welsh.
