By Richard James at Lord's.
Middlesex dominated play on the first day of their County Championship Division Two game against Surrey at Lord's having bowled their local rivals out for just 167.
In response Middlesex reached stumps 179 for 2 with Owais Shah unbeaten on 44 and Dawid Malan in 35.
Having already passed Surrey's first innings score with eight wickets in hands Middlesex will be extremely confident of getting a result out of the game.
Having lost the toss and been forced to bowl the home side were gifted some superb conditions for swing bowling and proceeded to dismantle Surrey in superb fashion in the first two sessions.
Tim Murtagh and Pedro Collins took nine wickets between them as Surrey were reduced to 167 all out.
Murtagh ended with figures of 5 for 52 and Collins with 4 for 68 as Middlesex's bowlers took full advantage of the overcast conditions on the first morning with some brilliant full-swinging deliveries.
Steve Davies was the first man to go, bowled by Murtagh for 24 in the 13th over with the score 39 for 1.
The dismissal led to a flood of wickets as Collins ripped through Surrey's top order. Tom Lancefield was the next to fall, LBW, before captain Rory Hamilton-Brown was dismissed in similar fashion the very next ball leaving the West Indies bowler on a hat-trick.
Usman Afzaal survived the hat-trick ball but was on his way back to the pavilion shortly before lunch after being removed LBW by Toby Roland-Jones having made 11 and leaving Surrey on 96 for 4.
The visiting side made it to the break with the score 80 for 4 with Mark Ramprakash 21 not out and Stewart Walters 9 not out.
The pair survived for a while after lunch before the former was also on his way back to the pavilion having made 44 after a fantastic swinging delivery from Collins demolished his stumps.
The sensational bowling from Middlesex continued and Stewart Walters was the next to fall, looking to clip a Murtagh delivery into the leg side but instead clattering the ball onto his off stump.
Gareth Batty attempted to ease the tension somewhat with a cameo innings of 15 off nine balls but a brilliant catch from Josh Davey at point off Murtagh brought his innings to an end with the score 142 for 7.
Murtagh soon had another wicket four balls later when Chris Tremlett edged a catch to Middlesex captain Neil Dexter at second slip.
Jade Dernbach (12) and Matthew Spriegel (25) fell soon after as Collins and Murtagh took another wicket each, bringing Surrey's first innings to an end on 167 after only 46 overs.
In response Middlesex were soon able to capitalise on some very ordinary bowling from Surrey and the opening pair of Scott Newman and John Simpson put on 82 without loss before the latter dragged a delivery from Jade Dernbach onto his stumps having made 36.
Newman (54) then fell not long after making his half century, looking to sweep a straight delivery from Batty and ending up being removed LBW.
Shah and Malan then steadied the ship though and with a unbroken partnership of 67 took the score to 179 for 2 at the end of play, handing Middlesex a 12 run lead after the first day.
