Blackburn Rovers have completed the loan signing of France international defender Gael Givet from Marseille.
The 27-year-old has joined Rovers on an initial deal which will keep him at Ewood Park until the end of the season, but the club have an option of signing Givet to a long-term permanent contract after that. Blackburn will have to pay a fee in the region of £4 million if they want to sign the player permanently.
Givet joined Marseille in the summer of June 2007 after spending a decade at rivals Monaco, who he helped to the Champions League final in 2004. He made 27 appearances for Marseille last season but has not played at all this season after falling-out with manager Erik Gerets.
Blackburn have signed a quality player who has played 13 times for his country and can operate at either left-back or central defence. The Frenchman could make his debut for the club in the FA Cup fourth round tie against Sunderland in Saturday week.
Meanwhile, Rovers manager Sam Allardyce could add further players to his defence. Benfica defender Marco Zoro played in a behind-closed-doors game for the club against Huddersfield in the view to earning a contract with Blackburn.
