Nico Rosberg has snubbed the chance to join Lewis Hamilton at McLaren after signing a new deal with Williams.
Hamilton, 22, was keen on Rosberg being his new team-mate after the departure of double world champion Fernando Alonso.
Bur rising star Rosberg, 22, has agreed a new deal with Williams which runs out at the end of the 2009 season.
German Rosberg said Williams had made him a lucrative offer that he could not refuse.
"For Williams the question of letting me go [to McLaren] never arose," Rosberg said.
"I could imagine myself (joining McLaren) just like I could see myself at Ferrari in 2008. Every young driver wants a car that can bring you the title.
I'm no different. I race for success. But I feel I have to be patient, like most people.
"There are only a few exceptions like Lewis [Hamilton] who can have immediate success. Mika Hakkinen had to wait six years for a first win."
It leaves Hamilton, the runner-up in last season's drivers' championship, still without a team-mate.
Adrian Sutil or Heikki Kovalainen are the front-runners to join McLaren, according to reports.
McLaren must also wait until February to find out whether their new car is legal, after the World Motor Sport Council postponed its decision at a meeting on Friday.
