The scan that will determine whether Wayne Rooney will be fit enough to participate at the World Cup has been brought forward by a week to June 7th.
The move was made after a meeting between England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson, Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson and the medical teams treating the striker.
By bringing the scan forward by a week, the bone will have less time to heal, meaning that either the prognosis will be better than expected or that the injury will not have sufficient healing time.
Eriksson also wants to have time to call up a replacement before the Fifa deadline of June 9th, one day before England's first game.
"Following a meeting today between England's medical team and Manchester United's medical team with both managers present it has been agreed to obtain a further precautionary scan on June 7th in order to help the England management to make a decision [on Rooney's fitness] before the deadline of June 9th," a statement from Manchester United said.
"Both parties agree that everything possible is being done to aid recovery of a fracture that involves the joint."
The results of a previous scan on the injury meant that Rooney was only likely to feature in the knockout stages of the competition.
The fact that the injury is to the joint usually means that the bone takes longer to heal, casting further doubt on Rooney's participation in Germany.
Rooney was expected to fly with the rest of the squad to their training camp at Baden-Baden next Monday but he will now remain in England and have the scan on Wednesday 7th.
If he is ruled out of the World Cup, he will be replaced by one of the two strikers on the standby list, either Tottenham's Jermain Defoe or Andy Johnson, who is finalising a move from Crystal Palace to Everton.
