Premiership title rivals Jose Mourinho and Cristiano Ronaldo have been drawn into a war of words over the claims of the Chelsea manager over penalty decisions.
Just a day after riling Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez with his pre and post-match comments surrounding the Champions League semi-final, Mourinho has turned his attention back to league leaders Manchester United.
The Portuguese tactician told a television station in his homeland that countryman and Manchester United star Ronaldo was a "liar" if he denied Mourinho's assertion that the Old Trafford side benefited from suspect refereeing decisions.
When asked about Mourinho's claims of a conspiracy against the Blues, the PFA Player of the Year had told Portuguese TV that Mourinho "always has to say something when he is not happy.[he] doesn't know how to admit his own failures".
But the former Porto boss swiftly responded with a swipe that is sure to raise the hackles of Sir Alex Ferguson and the rest of the Manchester United dressing room.
"If he says it is a lie that Manchester United have conceded some penalties this season which have not been awarded against them, he is lying," Mourinho replied.
"And if he lies he will never reach the level that he wants to reach."
After victories in the respective European clashes in midweek, the two teams resume their pursuit of the title with the Red Devils visiting Everton while Chelsea welcome Bolton to Stamford Bridge.
Just three points separate the pair with four games still to play.
