Andy Roddick and James Blake have both lost in the first round of the French Open along with six other Americans.
Roddick looked to be in control of his game with world number 125 Igor Andreev having opened up a 4-2 lead early in the match he then went on to take the first set.
But the Russian bounced back and Roddick could not find the correct response to some big baseline hitting from Andreev.
Andreev took the next three sets to claim the match 3-6 6-4 6-3 6-4 and sent the number three seed crashing out.
Roddick felt he had given a good account of himself on his least favourite surface despite the defeat.
He said: "It was difficult, but I made him go out and beat me. I felt like I hit the ball OK and at times really well."
Blake fared no better in his match up with Croatia's Ivo Karlovic, losing 4-6 6-4 7-5 7-5.
In a game of few service breaks Blake was able to claim a tight first set. However, the Croatian's superior power came through as he served 22 aces in the match to progress into the second round.
Elsewhere, defending champion Rafael Nadal had few problems in dispatching Argentinean teenager Juan Martin del Potro 7-5 6-3 6-2.
Despite being broken midway through the first set the Spaniard bounced back to win it himself. He never looked troubled from there and took the remaining two sets at a canter.
