Sir Bobby Robson is recuperating after undergoing a lung operation following an accident while skiing.
Robson, the former England boss, is now involved with the Irish national team in the role as advisor to rookie Steve Staunton.
The two men were appointed in the summer and were said to be working well together before Robson sustained the injury.
A statement from the Irish FA has confirmed that his condition is improving.
"The operation was very successful and it is expected that Sir Bobby will spend a short time recuperating," the statement added.
Staunton has also expressed his confidence that Robson will soon be ready to return to work.
"Knowing Sir Bobby as I do, he will be back fighting fit in no time," he added.
Robson has had a glittering career in football management with spells at Barcelona, Newcastle, Ipswich and England.
At the 1990 World Cup Robson steered the national team to its best performance since the 1966 victory, going all the way to the semi-finals.
