Andy Robinson wants his Scotland team to use a 23-10 victory over Fiji in his first game in charge as a springboard for future improvement.
Scotland won the game comfortably with tries from Johnnie Beattie and Graeme Morrison, but committed a number of errors, which Robinson believes they must cut out as they prepare to face Australia next weekend.
"The first 35 minutes, we played very well," said Robinson.
"We played in fits and starts after that.
"We gave a lot of penalties away and knocked the ball on and the guys are a bit disappointed at that.
"We will have to raise our game next week. We are not going to get carried away, but it is a start," he added.
Chris Cusiter, who was named co-captain along with Mike Blair by Robinson, was frustrated with his team's performance, but said the players were enjoying working under their new coach.
"He is very good at motivating the players, but he will be a bit frustrated at the errors we made.
"We lost our rhythm in the second half and had a few turnovers," said the captain.
"We got ourselves in some good positions but were not clinical enough."
