Micah Richards has been named in the full England squad for next week's friendly against Holland.
The young Manchester City defender won promotion from the under-21s as under-fire boss Steve McClaren attempts to erase the memories of a home draw with Macedonia and a defeat to Croatia.
Richards is a centre-half by trade but has often been used as a right-back, a position where McClaren lacks cover for 31-year-old Gary Neville.
Despite blotting his copybook with a pitch-side tantrum after being substituted earlier this season, Richards is highly regarded at City and has been impressive at under-21 level.
Watford keeper Ben Foster earns his first call-up, while uncapped Spurs defender Michael Dawson is also named in the squad.
After just four competitive games McClaren is already under pressure and with four months until the next qualifier the former Middlesbrough manager will welcome back Joe Cole.
The Chelsea midfielder is joined in the suqad by last month's absentees, Aaron Lennon and Andrew Johnson, who return after injury.
Cole's colleague Shaun Wright-Phillips also makes the squad, despite his continued lack of playing time.
