The Rugby Football League (RFL) will investigate comments made by Leeds Rhino centre Keith Senior after criticising the referee in his side's defeat to Melbourne Storm in the World Club Challenge on Sunday.
The 33-year-old accused referee Richard Silverwood of being 'arrogant' after he was penalised for dissent during the Engage Super League champions' 18-10 loss at Elland Road last night.
Senior's comments - made to journalists in the mixed zone an hour after the match - will be investigated by the RFL, which has pledged to make a swift decision. The RFL's compliance manager will study Senior's remarks and could charge the veteran with bringing the game into disrepute.
But Senior, who was fuming over what he saw as Silverwood's failure to punish Melbourne for repeatedly lying on the ball while it was in play, looks to have avoided a hefty fine after issuing an apology.
He said: "I would like to apologise for any offence caused by my comments following our defeat to Melbourne. Unfortunately I let my emotions get the better of me after a physically and mentally draining clash with Melbourne.
"Having had time to reflect on my comments, I appreciate that, like us players, referees have a difficult job to do and we do not have a game without them."
The RFL expressed its desire to resolve the situation as quickly as possible
"Our compliance manager will look at all the evidence, including the player's apology," an RFL spokesperson said.
"We are looking for a swift conclusion. It is not something we want to drag on."
