Remand for woman charged with killing her two children

A 36-year-old mother has been charged with stabbing her two children to death
A 36-year-old mother charged with murdering her two children has been remanded after appearing in court.

Sasikala Navaneethan from Carshalton, south London, is charged with stabbing her five-year-old son Shanjayan and four-year-old daughter Sharani to death in May.

She is also charged with the attempted murder of a six-month-old baby who received hospital treatment but was later discharged.

She was remanded by magistrates in Sutton and will next appear at the Old Bailey on January 13th.

On May 30th the Metropolitan police were called to an address in Park Lane, in Carshalton, and discovered three children suffering serious injuries, with Shanjayan and Sharani later dying in hospital.

Ms Navaneethan was arrested at the scene and taken to hospital. On June 1st, she was detained for assessment under section two of the Mental Health Act and on June 27th she was further detained under section three of the act to allow for further treatment.

A 40-year-old man was also initially arrested but was released without charge.
