Acoustic hammers of the devil, difficult easy listening What's it all about? Eleven tracks from the Mexico guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela. Moving away from metal covers, each track is a tribute to their greatest influences, apparently. Appearing on this album of classical guitars is Alex Skolnick from thrash metal gods Testament. The album also comes with a great bonus DVD - a rare add-on. As well as some gumpfy interview and tours of the studio, there is a masterclass tutorial and live performances - a thrill to see how Rod and Gab use their instruments and interplay. Who's it by? Rodrigo y Gabriela started off in metal; a worthy profession for a guitarist to learn the craft. A journey seeped in mystery and romance and legend led them to put down their amps and behold the Spanish guitar. An ancient Mexican alchemist placed magic powers in their sound boxes and a new genre of 'folk metal' was spawned. The power of the two folk metalists took them on a journey across the world to Dublin in search of the perfect G. What the others say "The Gipsy Kings-meet-Led Zep ethos will never appeal to the faint-hearted, but its hard not to be impressed by the sheer energy." - Times "There are more changes of mood and pace than in the past, with new textures provided by the addition of oud, sitar, piano, and even electric guitar. The best tracks include Hunaman, Buster Voodoo and Chac Mool, but all feature the remarkable interplay between the two guitarists." - Guardian So is it any good? Rodrigo y Gabriela should be classed in anyone's fantasty festival line up. Their guitars are not the stuff of gentle dinner party backgrounds - they are amazing walls of sound coming out of wooden boxes with strings attached. If you can't see them live, get the 2008 Live In Japan album for a taste. The duo have moved away from just covers of metal classics and on to their own material - and I am sure fans that can delve into the music will hear amazing progression. As much as 11:11 is fantastic, it is hard to feel why you ought to own more than one of their albums. Certainly everyone should acquire one of their albums and see them a dozen times, but does 11:11 really offer anything new? The album is a move to bigger production - although it still has a cottage atmosphere - and there are not only two classical guitars but some electric and a hatful of other noisy machines. It's certainly a really good album and the most difficult easy listening around. Maybe it's just missing something that makes me want to listen to the album again and again. But when you do listen again and again, it gets into your head - in a great way. Brilliant. 7/10 Daniel Barnes Email Print Twitter Facebook MySpace Stumble Digg Share
