Model Citizen Records, out now.
In a nutshell.
A cartoonist punk band who hold nothing back
What's it all about?
The album is an edgy punk album consisting of 12 songs and a bonus CD with some extra similar tunes. The lead vocals are a lady named MayKay and backed by screaming male vocals from the rest of the band. Produced in Seattle by John Goodmanson and influenced heavily by My Bloody Valentine the music contains a lot of riot girl lyrics.
It definitely has a different vibe to most other bands at the moment and is one to be noticed by even minutely angsty teenagers. The singing could be compared to some confused toddlers at times but this may be the direction the band have purposely taken. It unquestionably takes a few listens before you begin to warm to its playground lyrical screams.
Who's it by?
The band formed in 2006 with Mary-Kate Geraghty (known as "MayKay") as lead vocals. She is a former choir singer, and her friends, Jamie Fox, Adrian Mullan and Tom Ryan, all of whom had experience in other bands, came together.
BBC Radio 1's Steve Lamacq has described Fight Like Apes as a "great misfit band" and this album with their famously long titled songs such as 'I'm Beginning To Think You Prefer Beverley Hills 90210 To Me'. This band is on the peripherals of the indie scene and have played at a variety of festivals from Oxygen to Benicassim in Spain.
As an example.
Lead maniac singer May Kay barking "You're like Kentucky Fried Chicken but without the taste"
Likelihood of a trip to the Grammys
Fight like Apes have been greatly recognised throughout the music scene and the ferocious voice of MayKay, with her long black hair and banshee wail provoking male fans to confess simultaneous feelings of terror and attraction online.
However, the band will hang on to their underground following in the punk-rock scene and find it difficult to break into the mainstream charts anytime soon.
What the others say
"Their fight-and-make-up pop is like Dananananaykroyd gone new wave, with the B-movie and comic-book geek-joy of early Ash." - NME online
"This first effort is like a punch in the face: you might not like it, but it'll certainly knock you for six." - Theskinny.co.uk
So is it any good?
It is a teeny bopper album and a bit ridiculous really with the profanities in the lyrics to just have a reason to shout aimlessly at listeners. The band are clearly very talented and the cartoonist appeal the band have means they may not be taken as seriously as they may like to be.
Digifucker is full of puns such as "Did you f**k her?/And did you stick things up her?" providing MayKay with comical rage. Fight like Apes will not fail to make an impression on the UK music scene, but don't bet on long term success from these Irish screamers.
