19 Entertainment, out now.
In a nutshell...
Edgy, independent, strong-willed, and smart.
What's it all about?
There are ten songs and a bonus track revolving around the theme of relationship with boys and the harsh reality of love. Some of the tracks drag on, but the album is quite consistent in its message.
Who's it by?
Amy Studt is a British singer, songwriter, and musician. She recorded her first demo at the age of 14 and was signed under Polydor. She released her first sing Just a Little Girl in 2002 with international success, before her debut album False Smiles followed. In late 2003 and early 2004, Amy received less success with her singles Under the Thumb and All I Wanna Do which caused Polydor to let go of Amy in 2004. She remained out of the public eye until 2008 with this new album, My Paper Made Men.
As an example...
"With aching knees and back,/The weight is hard to bear/But she carries it with a smile." - She Walks Beautiful
Likelihood of a trip to the Grammys
I think critics will see the talent in this album, but it is still missing a certain kind of magic that would make it stand out from other just as talented artists.
What the others say?
"She Ran will be a good single choice, as is Nice Boys. But in following Miss Amos so closely, Amy has sacrificed her own personal touch. Even though a great deal of care has been invested into this album, the songs lack creativity and are inspired rather than imaginative." - Paul Cole, Sunday Mercury
"My Paper Made Men heralds the return of a darker and more tried Amy. Ms Studt, now 21, has spent the last few years touring, and gaining life experiences in an attempt to equal the writing quality of her debut." - UKMIX
So is it any good?
When Amy Studt sings, one can really feel the emotions behind her lyrics which elicit a honest and much deeper connection to her audience. Amy's comparisons of love situations to a rabbit game and furniture are thoroughly impressive and although Amy successfully says much with few words in her tracks, one cannot help but feel a depressing mood that My Paper Made Men sets out. In fact, it is Amy's accurate and bare description of reality that sets you in a contemplative and hopeless mood.
Overall, a great album, but it could call for a variation in sentiment.
