Television nutritionist Dr Gillian McKeith has been forced to remove two of her products from the shelves after a government agency deemed that they were being marketed as medicinal products.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), an executive agency of the Department of Health (DoH), ruled that two of Dr McKeith's products are medicines because they maintain well-known medicinal herbs, despite the fact that they are being marketed as plant-based products.

As a result the MHRA has forced Dr McKeith to perform a detox on her Fast Formula Horny and Fast Formula Wild Pink products, which provide plant formula complexes purporting to help men and women in the bedroom.

"Companies who place products on the market have a clear duty to ensure that those products comply with all relevant legislation," David Carter, manager of the medicines borderline section, said.

"As Dr McKeith's organisation had already been made aware of the requirements of medicines legislation in previous years there was no reason for all the products not to be compliant with the law. It would have been a very simple matter for them to have sought our opinion."

The controversial Dr McKeith shot to fame with a series of television programmes encouraging healthy eating and a book spin-off of the same name, entitled You Are What You Eat.

Her Dr Gillian McKeith Club sells a range of health products to its members at discounted prices, including sauces, juices, biscuits and slimming plans.
