England and Wasps flanker Tom Rees has been ruled out for at least four months after being told he needs further surgery on a shoulder injury.
Rees suffered a torn labrum and underwent an operation in July, which was expected to cure the problem and enable him to be fit by the early part of this season.
However, after further consultation Rees was sent for further surgery this week and is not expected to return to training until at least mid-February - making him a doubt for the start of next year's Six Nations.
"Following extensive consultations between Tom, the medical team at London Wasps, the club's orthopaedic team and the England medical team, it was decided this week that further surgery was required to give Tom optimal results for recovery," said a Wasps statement.
"Sustaining a tear to the labrum (shoulder) Tom underwent surgery in July, but it was felt that to preserve the longevity of his career an additional surgical procedure was to be undertaken.
"This surgery has been completed this week and it is likely that he will now be sidelined for at least a four-month period as he works through his rehabilitation."
England's Six Nations campaign begins at Twickenham on February 6th against Wales, with further games that month coming against Italy in Rome the following weekend and at home to Ireland two weeks later.
