Impressive gains by Royal Bank of Scotland helped the FTSE 100 record a healthy start to the week on Monday.
At the close of play the London index stood at 5,247.41, a rise of 58.89 points, or 1.14 per cent.
Leading the gains was RBS, which leapt 7.93 per cent to 34.86p.
Vedanta Resources also recorded impressive gains of 5.19 per cent, with Barclays rising considerably; up 4.31 per cent to 282.2p.
Fund firm Schroders was the top faller of the day, down 2.81 per cent, after Credit Suisse downgraded its rating to "neutral" from "outperform".
Imperial Tobacco Group also dropped 1.18 per cent.
