New Tottenham manager Juande Ramos has promised the White Hart Lane faithful that he is the man to drag the club back up the Premier League table.

The Spanish tactician, recruited from Sevilla after Martin Jol's exit last week, believes Tottenham's current position in the relegation zone with just one league win to their name will soon change.

"I want to take it step by step. I want to get results quickly to breed confidence and then I can think about the long-term. But this is a great club and the aim is to take us to the top," he said.

"I'm very happy to be here, this is a great club and a great team."

Ramos successfully retained the Uefa Cup last season and was in the midst of his maiden Champions League campaign with Sevilla, but he insists the time was right for him to switch to the precariously-placed north London outfit.

"I rejected three of four offers from Premier League clubs in the summer. However, this is the right time for me to join Tottenham and I'm very happy to be here," he said.

The 53-year-old had been linked to the manager's position at Manchester City after Thaksin Shinawatra's takeover at Eastlands and before the appointment of Sven Goran Eriksson.

Spurs' director of football Damien Comolli is believed to have clashed with Jol over transfer policy during the closing stages of his reign at the club, but the Frenchman is confident that there will be no similar problems with his new colleague.

"For us, for Juande, he has worked in this structure all his career - so for him, there is no problem with this. It will be exactly the same, I will work with Juande, there wasn't big discussions because we didn't feel it was a problem," he said.

Ramos carried out his first press conference in England with the aid of a translator, but he reassured his new charges that his services would be dispensed with once he was behind closed doors.

"On the training pitch I speak English and the players understand me perfectly. But I am still learning and I preferred to face the media with a translator," he said.
