The FTSE 100 fell 0.53 per cent to end the day at 4,890.58, breaking a six-day winning streak.
The slump in mining and energy stocks still weighs heavily on the index, with Fresnillo leading the falls, down by 5.18 per cent.
Antofagasta was also trading lower, and fell by 4.75 per cent, while Cairn Energy dropped by 4.14 per cent and Tullow Oil was down by 3.92 per cent.
There was still plenty of optimism in the market today, however, and support services firm Serco jumped six per cent on better-than-expected first-half results.
Royal Bank of Scotland was also rising strongly, up 5.3 per cent, while investment firm Schroders was up by 2.84 per cent.
Over in the US, the market rally also faltered. While the Dow Jones was up by 0.05 per cent, the S&P 500 was off by 0.19 per cent going into afternoon trading.
