Rain prevented any play on day two in the second Test between England and West Indies at the Riverside.
After showers throughout the day, the umpires abandoned play at 1605 BST.
England, who lead the two-match series 1-0, made 302-2 on day one.
Saturday's forecast is much better but showers could return in the afternoon.
The 5,000 people who had bought tickets for the second day will be eligible for free entry on the remaining days, although availability is likely to be limited on Saturday with a full house expected.
England will look to extend their advantage on Saturday after a superb first day, which saw opener Alastair Cook and number three Ravi Bopara both record centuries against a lacklustre attack.
Captain Andrew Strauss was dismissed early on for 26, caught behind off the spin of Chris Gayle.
But Bopara and his Essex team-mate Cook posted a 213-run partnership in the afternoon to take the score to 280-1, before the former was bowled by Lionel Baker.
However, Cook (126 not out) and nightwatchman James Anderson (four not out) reached 302-2 by the close and will be keen to get to the crease again today.
