Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has blamed his side's crucial defeat to Wigan Athletic on a poor attitude during the Monday night fixture.
The Reds' chances of reaching the fourth Champions League spot were dealt a huge blow at the DW Stadium after Hugo Rodallega's 35th minute goal gave Wigan the three points.
And speaking after the Anfield outfit's ninth defeat in 29 Premier League matches, Benitez admitted: "I'm really disappointed."
He continued: "In the first half we didn't do anything and didn't show the attitude required. It's difficult to explain.
"At half-time we talked about the things we weren't doing well - the attitude and the character. We made too many mistakes and played too quickly."
Wigan's victory, their first since January 16th, gave the Lancashire outfit vital points in the bottom half of the table and left manager Roberto Martinez reflecting on missed chances throughout the season.
"We were worthy winners and that speaks volumes about the character of the players," he said as Wigan moved four points clear of the relegation zone.
"We have had a few painful lessons and thrown away 19 points and had we even kept half of them we would be in a completely different situation.
"We are a young squad but the way we beat Liverpool and Chelsea a few months ago shows the potential they have."
