The public are more hopeful about the state of the economy, with optimism at its highest for 18 months, a poll has shown.

A third of people now think the economic outlook for the UK could be better over the next year, although two thirds still think the country will do badly.

According to a Populus poll in The Times today 50 per cent of the 1,502 adults surveyed think they "will do well" in the next year, up from 46 per cent in July.

The survey found women are more pessimistic than men, and those living in the south-east of England are twice as optimistic as those in the Midlands, Wales and the south-west.

Middle-class people are also more optimistic than unskilled workers, though the gap has narrowed since July.

Official data found the British economy shrank by 0.4 percent in the third quarter, marking the longest period of recession since the second world war.
